Getting Around Vietnam: Flights, Trains & Road Travel

Compare domestic flights, trains, private vehicles, buses and local transport for a smoother multi-stop Vietnam itinerary.

Vietnam's shape makes transport part of the itinerary. The fastest option is not always the most comfortable, and the cheapest ticket can cost a full day once station transfers and waiting time are included.

Domestic flights

Flights are useful for large jumps such as Hanoi to Da Nang or central Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City. Compare total travel time from hotel to hotel, and leave a sensible connection margin when an international flight follows.

Baggage rules differ by fare. Check the allowance before payment, especially if your route includes several carriers or low-cost tickets.

Trains

The railway offers a slower view of the country and works well on selected sectors. Day trains can be scenic; overnight trains save a hotel night but not always a full day of energy. Cabin standards and noise vary, so choose based on comfort rather than novelty alone.

Private vehicles

A private car or van is valuable for routes with several stops, luggage, children or travellers who need a flexible pace. It also works well for scenic transfers such as Hue to Hoi An or Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

Long mountain drives should include daylight, rest stops and realistic road speeds. Distance in kilometres is a poor guide to travel time on winding roads.

Buses and shared transfers

Shared services connect most tourism centres and can be good value. Confirm the actual pickup location, vehicle style, luggage policy and whether the advertised arrival point is inside the destination or outside town.

Getting around cities

Ride-hailing apps, metered taxis and arranged transfers are common in larger cities. Use the address and map pin together because hotels can have similar names. Walking is rewarding in compact districts, but traffic requires patience at crossings.

A balanced transport plan

Fly between distant regions.

Use trains where the journey itself adds value.

Choose private road travel for flexible regional exploration.

Avoid changing cities every night; transport is easier when the itinerary has breathing room.
