The Mekong splits into nine mouths before it reaches the sea, and this route follows two of them. Can Tho sits on the Hau River and is the delta's largest city, about 170km and three and a half hours southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Both nights are spent there, so you unpack once. From that base the days run outward by boat: the Hau River at dusk, Cai Rang wholesale market before sunrise, the shaded coconut canals at Ben Tre, the orchard islands off Vinh Long, and finally My Tho on the Tien River, ninety minutes from Saigon and the last stop before the drive home. Almost everything here is seen from the water, which is the only honest way to see the delta.

•Not for late risers, and not for anyone expecting the delta of twenty years ago. The floating markets have shrunk hard as roads replaced boats. Cai Rang is still a working wholesale market and still worth the alarm clock, but the smaller markets are largely gone. Also not the trip if you need air-conditioning all day, since most hours are spent on open boats in humid heat.
