The terraces of Mu Cang Chai were cut by hand into mountainsides too steep for anything else, and they only look the way the photographs promise for a few weeks a year. Late May and early June the farmers flood them and the whole valley becomes a mirror. Late September and early October they turn gold and are cut within days. This trip goes in one of those two windows and nowhere else in between.
The rest follows the same logic. You are out before six at Mu Cang Chai because between six and nine the low sun rakes across the water and after that the haze arrives. You walk the Muong Hoa Valley instead of viewing it from a lay-by. You reach Bac Ha before the market fills. And you finish on Ha Long Bay, at anchor overnight, for the one morning of the week when the bay is quiet.

Route
This is a loop through the northwest highlands with a night on the water at the end of it. It runs 280km out of Hanoi to Mu Cang Chai, over the Khau Pha Pass and into terraced country that Hmong families have been cutting into these slopes for more than twenty generations. It crosses the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa and the Muong Hoa Valley, then north to the Bac Ha plateau for the Sunday market, the largest highland market in the region. Then back to Hanoi and out east to Ha Long Bay, where 1,969 limestone islands rise from the Gulf of Tonkin, for a single night aboard. The driving days are long by design. In this part of Vietnam the road is where most of the photographs are.

This morning, start your excellent photography tour to the beautiful & untouched mountainous areas where you can see endless terraced rice fields. The best time for the trip is from Jul to Sep as the fields will be green in Jul & Aug, golden in Sep.
For any photographers who set foot for the first time, this town is itself an exciting place because of its mountainous topography. A scenic landscape will appear in front of your eyes: tea gardens and small streams come into view, an infinite green of trees, bushes and fresh air. Just more than one hour from Nghia Lo, you will have another stop at Tu Le Valley with the peaceful scenery of a prosperous countryside and visit Lim Mong village Before crossing the “horn of heaven” (Khau Pha Pass), Tu Le appears with a scent that offers lots of photo opportunities.
If you come here in September, you will be immersed in the aroma of rice. There are also large streams providing irrigation for the whole region that is perfectly mixed with golden rice fields. Finally, arrive in Mu Cang Chai in the late afternoon.
