This journey is real. Yours will be your own version of it.

Eight days, one base, and three very different places within a day's reach of it.

Hanoi does the work of a hub without being treated as a waiting room. The first evening is a private food tour on foot, six to eight tastings through streets that do not appear in guidebooks, ending at Hoan Kiem Lake as the lights come on. Later there is a vintage jeep morning through the French Quarter, past Ba Dinh Square and around West Lake to Tran Quoc, the oldest pagoda in the city, founded in the sixth century.

Out from there, the country opens in three directions. South to Ninh Binh, where limestone towers rise out of rice paddy and the boats are rowed by hand, often with the rower's feet. Northwest overnight to Sapa, where a cable car climbs 1,400 vertical metres to the highest point in mainland Southeast Asia. East to Ha Long Bay, for a night at anchor among the karst.

Route

Eight days built around Hanoi as a base, reaching out to the three places most people come north for. Ninh Binh is 100km south, close enough for a full day and back: the tenth-century capital at Hoa Lu, a rowboat through the flooded channels of Trang An, and five hundred steps up Mua Cave for the view over the whole valley. Sapa is 320km northwest, reached overnight by cabin sleeper bus, with the Fansipan cable car climbing to 3,143m the following morning. Ha Long Bay is 175km east on the expressway, and gets a night aboard among its 1,969 limestone islands. Between them, Hanoi itself: a food tour on foot the first evening, a vintage jeep through the French Quarter and around West Lake, and the Old Quarter to walk whenever there is time left over.

About this trip

Northern Vietnam holds four of the country's most spectacular destinations, and this 8-day itinerary connects them in exactly the right order. You'll explore Hanoi by Vintage Jeep, row through Ninh Binh's limestone valley, ride the cable car to Fansipan's summit in Sapa, and finish on a cruise through Halong Bay. Hotels, transfers, entrance tickets, and domestic travel are all pre-arranged - your only job is to show up.

The journey, day by day

Written out the way it runs, so nothing is left to your imagination. Read it, note the days you would keep and the ones you would skip, and a local expert reshapes the rest around you.

A deliberately light first day. After a long-haul flight the useful thing is to eat well, walk a little, and sleep.

Vegetarian and vegan routes are available with advance notice.

This covers the journey as written above. Once your version is set, your local expert confirms in writing exactly what sits inside your quote and what does not, before anything is agreed.

Is this journey a good starting point for you?

The honest version

Eight days, three regions, and you unpack twice. Most northern Vietnam itineraries move hotels every night. This one keeps Hanoi as the base and reaches Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Long from it, which is why the days feel longer than they look on paper.

A good starting point if you are

First-time visitors who want the whole of northern Vietnam in one trip without booking eight separate things. Everything is private, the day trips are properly guided, and Hanoi as a base means only two nights of packing across eight days. The food tour on the first evening is a genuinely good opening move for anyone arriving jet-lagged.

Say so early if you

Sapa gets one hotel night for two overnight bus journeys, which is a lot of road for the time on the ground. Anyone whose main interest is the mountains would be better served by a dedicated Sapa itinerary with two or three nights up there. Two of the seven nights are also spent on a bus and a boat rather than in a bed, which suits some travellers and not others.

The next step asks for real detail. Your dates, who is travelling, how you like to move, what you would change about this route. It takes a few minutes to fill in, because a local expert writes your itinerary from those answers rather than sending you a file. Nothing is booked or charged at this stage.
