Sapa sits at 1,600m on the eastern edge of the Hoang Lien Son range, about 315km northwest of Hanoi and reachable in five hours on the expressway or overnight on the sleeper train. All four nights are in the same hotel, so the trip works outward from a single base. Day three goes up: the cable car climbs 1,400 vertical metres in about twenty minutes to the shoulder of Fansipan, then six hundred stone steps to the summit at 3,143m. Day four goes down: a full day on foot through Muong Hoa Valley, past terraces cut into the hillsides over generations, through Giay and Black Hmong villages along the valley floor, and out to the Red Dao at Giang Ta Chai. Up and down, and the whole range in between.

Your Sapa adventure begins with the journey itself. Depending on your preference, you travel from Hanoi to Sapa either by private car along the expressway - a smooth 5-hour drive through the Red River plains and into the rising foothills - or by overnight sleeper train, a classic northern Vietnam experience that delivers you to Lao Cai station as the mountain mist begins to lift in the early morning.

•Overnight train option: board in Hanoi evening, arrive Lao Cai around 5-6am, then transfer by van up the winding road to Sapa town (45 min).
